This island, and specifically its main town Georgetown, was once a favourite
GI R+R place and there are still meant to be vestiges of the trade today.
While being wheeled around in a trishaw the 200-year-old driver asks
'Massage? Massage?'. It was noon, for Chrissakes! That evening I was taking
a taxi back to my hotel and when he heard the name the driver said they
did a good massage. The hotel was the Cathay and indeed it had a Health
Center which was drawing a crowd of locals. I didn't try it. Late that
night I was approached by a couple of TV's in a car asking if I wanted a
good time. Only with the sweet young things back in KL, I should have said.
